Hierarchy and Specialized Charts

These families answer more specialized questions. Begin with comparison or trend charts when possible, and use the compatibility explanation to identify the required data for each specialized view.

Polar charts

Comparing magnitudes by angle and radius.

The example loads when visible.

Polar charts require non-negative values.

TypeBest forRequired data
roseComparing magnitudes by angle and radius.Category, value, and series.
radarLineComparing multivariate profiles. At least three categories, non-negative values, and series.
radarAreaComparing filled multivariate profiles. At least three categories, non-negative values, and series.
polarColumnRadial category comparison.Category, value, and series.
radialColumnRectangular radial columns for category comparison.Non-negative category/value data and one or more series.
stackedPolarColumnRadial totals and composition.Category, value, and series.
normalizedPolarColumnRadial percentage composition.Category, value, and series.
radialBarA single-series circular progress comparison.Category, value, and exactly one series.
multiRingRadialBarComparing several series as concentric rings.Category, value, and series.

Hierarchy charts

Space-efficient nested proportions.

The example loads when visible.

Treemap, sunburst, icicle and circle packing require row-hierarchy metadata and select one non-negative weight series. Organization cards use their own parent-ID or dimension-path hierarchy contract and can omit numeric weights.

TypeBest forRequired data
treemapSpace-efficient nested proportions.hierarchy plus one weight measure.
sunburstConcentric hierarchy levels.hierarchy plus one weight measure.
icicleDepth-oriented rectangular hierarchy.hierarchy plus one weight measure.
circlePackingNested hierarchy represented by packed circles.hierarchy plus one weight measure.
organizationParent/child reporting structures with cards and connectors.Stable category/parent-ID or dimension-path hierarchy; numeric weights are optional. Missing parents and cycles reject.

Treemap includes a category legend so names remain identifiable when a tile is too narrow for its header. Legend colors match the tiles, including custom renderer palettes. Use presentation.legendPosition to position it or set 'none' to hide it, and the renderer’s labels API to translate or style legend text. Very compact or dense legends retain the shared overflow indicator; each tile still exposes its full name through hover and keyboard focus.

Matrix and specialized charts

Comparing magnitude across category-by-series cells.

The example loads when visible.

TypeBest forRequired data
heatmapComparing magnitude across category-by-series cells.Category, value, and series.
calendarHeatmapActivity intensity by date.A date-semantic category, value, and exactly one series.
waterfallSequential positive and negative contribution to a result.Category, value, and exactly one series.
timelineRangeStart/end intervals by category.Exactly one start and one end measure.

Process, flow, and financial charts

Stage-by-stage conversion or attrition.

The example loads when visible.

TypeBest forRequired data
funnelStage-by-stage conversion or attrition.Non-negative category/value data and one series.
coneFunnelProportional stage widths connected by tapered segments.Non-negative category/value data and one selected series.
pyramidHierarchical-looking stage magnitude.Non-negative category/value data and one series.
sankeyWeighted directional flows.source, target, and non-negative weight channels.
chordWeighted relationships in a circular flow matrix.source, target, and non-negative weight channels.
candlestickOpen/high/low/close price movement. One or more explicit OHLC groups bound to open, high, low, and close; each close field owns a group.
ohlcCompact open/high/low/close price ticks. One or more explicit OHLC groups with distinct close owners.
volumePriceOHLC price movement plus traded volume. One or more paired OHLC/volume groups with distinct close and volume owners.

Geographic providers

Explore schematic provider-owned regions. The example does not include real map geometry.

The example loads when visible.

createPivotChartGeographicCapabilityPack(provider) creates a standalone host for provider-owned choropleth, proportionalSymbolMap, and geographicHeatmap views. Render these explicitly with pack.render(...). They are intentionally outside PIVOT_CHART_TYPES and the standard gallery. The provider owns map assets, projected geometry, and licensing; Pivot does not bundle a map library or geographic data.

See data/channel reference, renderer capabilities and server data.
