Parts of a Whole
Use a proportion chart to answer “what share does each category contribute?” Keep the number of slices small. For comparing similar values precisely, prefer bars.

Part-to-whole charts
A small set of category shares.
Use a single measure for an ordinary proportion chart. Pivot selects the first available series when the report exposes several.
pie and donut omit negative sectors and display a warning; the original dataset values remain available. semiDonut and waffle require non-negative values. Use a bar chart when negative amounts are part of the comparison, so they are visible rather than omitted.
| Type | Best for | Required data |
|---|---|---|
pie | A small set of category shares. | Category, value, and exactly one series. |
donut | Shares with a central visual summary area. | Category, value, and exactly one series. |
semiDonut | A compact half-ring composition. | Category, value, and exactly one series. |
waffle | Discrete-looking proportions in a 100-cell grid. | Category, value, and exactly one series. |
Apply this type in code
Section titled “Apply this type in code”Compare each slice with its value in the data table before adding labels. For a ready chart:
await chart.update({ chartType: 'pie' });
